Spring Decorating for 2012 is "Earth and Sky" Inspired

We just received our new Capel Rugs catalog. The fresh look of the new Kevin O'Brien area rugs remind me of spring. ( Look at Kevin's website, http://kevinobrienstudio.com/ don't you think his style kind of embodies spring decorating?)

The 2012 Benjamin Moore color palette "Earth and Sky" would create the perfect backdrop for the Kevin O'Brien rugs. The color are soft, but the pigment is strong. They could even be used in different combinations throughout the main living areas to flow together beautifully, yet define each area separately.

Items like the vintage dresser in the Capel rug photo above, and the vintage porcelain in the Benjamin Moore photo just above are a great illustration of how to add a little something old to a clean fresh design to give it a one of a kind appeal. We are putting on our sweaters here at Cartozian Fine Flooring and Rugs! This look from a Milan runway show reminds me of some of the sweater-like and nubby wool carpets our more fashion focused suppliers are showing. Soft and Textural, these make a great flooring choice for a comfortable retreat. From very casual random sized flecked loops to a little more tailored pattern which is still soft and sweater-y, you could really get cozy this winter with one of these carpets in your family room or den.

Turquoise is getting serious!

I have been loving all shades of Turquoise and Teal lately. A blog called "House of Turquoise" caught my eye and the entries make me smile. I think this color is getting serious. We have at least 3 new products featuring this color, and Pantone names deep teal as one of the colors for Fall 2011. The flooring in your home is a serious choice, and when manufacturers add colors to their line, it is a serious decision for them as well. There is research done and designers involved with product launches and they are choices designed work for years in the consumer's interior. I love the new Armstrong Duality G6012 color as well as pattern. Karastan's Boston Common in color Charles River is next, then Surface Art's Umbria Slate in Multi Sierra. It's your home, why not make it beautiful?

Shutters and Custom Carpeting, What a Week!

We have had a busy week! It started off with a really informative seminar at Hunter Douglas. We love showing shutters as a beautiful, solid, and sturdy choice for window coverings, and now there are even more choices with window shapes and opening features.

The other thing we are really excited about is a custom carpet program we are offering. We think it will be especially useful for interiors designers who would like to create a unique carpet of their own design for their clients.

The last thing we did was to look at a new hardwood line. It is the most unique thing we have seen, and we are very interested in bringing it on......

The romantic story of Berber

The design of Berber carpet was inspired by the hand spun cloth of the Berbers of Northwest Africa. It was made from wool and/or camel hair. In the Berber's cloth, specs of twig, or other bits were woven right into the fabric, giving it a fleck. They have been making the cloth at least as long as history has been recorded.
Our term "Berber" refers to color first. It is called Berber for the specs of other colors, like the ones spun into the Berbers cloth. We sell cut pile carpets with Berber in the color name, just referencing the fleck. "Berber Fleck" is a common term.
The term "Berber" also refers to loops of uneven sizes. Much of the cloth woven by the Berbers was looped, and was also the inspiration for our modern day "Berber" carpet. (The term "Berber", as you know, is used all the time to reference a looped carpet.)

"Designer's Choice"

One of our local interior designers, Barbara Berntsen of Blue Dofin Interiors http://www.bluedolfininteriors.com/ recently came to us looking for area rugs for her clients.
She said "Jewel Tones" will work best for them, and she would like one of the rugs to

have a "Medallion" for under the dining table. She found the "Emperor's Hunt" and the "Royal Tabriz"
by Karastan for her clients. The rugs were just perfect for her clients needs, and we were so happy that her clients liked these rugs, because they are two of our favorites. The Tabriz style rug for the
dining room is a great design choice for since the pattern won't feel lost under the table. The same colors are found in both rugs, which will tie the rooms together visually with out an "matching" effect.

"The look of rustic woods"

Rustic wood looks first found a home in the lodge or cabin design lifestyle. Designers love the look so much ( and we designers at Cartozian love it too) that they have found a ways to use it every where from mountain homes to downtown lofts. (The wood pictured is an "Antique" look by Lauzon. We think it really sets off this formal look.) We really like the forgiving nature of this kind of flooring for active lifestyles. We want our clients to really live in their beautiful rooms, and if they get a little dent in the floor, it just becomes part of the rustic look.

Transitional and Traditional

We like the unique design perspective of this room. The patterned draperies, white mouldings, and hardwood floors could have been the backdrop for a very traditional room. The "retro" style furniture and contemporary rug really pull it all together in a fabulous way. We have the Karastan rug pictured here in our showroom. Taka a look at the new area rugs that will be available soon from Nouison. Note their version of "Traditional." We like how they take a traditional motif and "explode" it onto a rug. Interesting how it can still fit into a very traditional environment.
