Shopping for your new carpet: A general guide
The most durable carpet is a wool carpet. That's because the natural spring in the natural wool fiber gives the best resilience. The fibers just can't stop bouncing back. Many of the wool carpets are also looped, which adds to the durability. Look for New Zealand wool. The wool fibers in general are the longest and the softest of the wools.
Nylon carpet is the next most durable choice, and the medium price range makes it a great choice for most projects. Nylon 6.6 is the most durable nylon. Stainmaster and Weardated are 2 brands of nylon 6.6. This formula provides the most durable fiber. Use your senses to pick your carpet. There are many nylon 6.6 carpets, but not all are created equal. Look closely at the yarn, is it twisted tightly? Feel the weight of different samples in the same price point. Does one have more density? Compare the backing on different samples. Feel the surface. Do you want a soft carpet or a more stiff carpet?
Polyester and Oelfin carpets do not have the wearability of a nylon or wool. They usually have a good pricepoint, which can be an advantage for some needs. There are some that are better than others, so use your senses when you decide.
Caring for your new carpet: A general guide

The best thing you can do for your new carpet is to vacuum. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum all the time. This gets the grit out that can break down and tear the carpet fibers. Empty your canister or change the bag often so you get the best cleaning possible. Use caution. Check your carpet warranty to see if any brand of vacuum will void your warranty. Some vacuums have so much suction that the carpet company may not warranty the carpet, especially the longer pile carpets. Between cleanings, spot clean stains with Spot Be Gone. Do not use any over the carpet spotters that contain chemicals or bleach. You might permanently set a stain. (Check with Hammond Knoll for spotting tips and to purchase Spot Be Gone if you choose.) Check your carpet warranty for cleaning tips and requirements. Most carpet companies require professional hot water extraction cleaning using a truck mounted system on a regular basis to keep your warranty in force. This tells you, it's a good idea to have your carpet cleaned regularly to extend the life. You can find carpet warranties on line, and it is a good idea to check them out for carpet care tips.
