Ways With Green

When I was at the Hunter Douglas window covering product launch I heard something interesting. (I will tell you about the new products in next week's post)  Bright greens are a going to play a very important part in our decorating schemes for the next few years.  I thought I would post some ideas for  balancing  bright green in a room.  In the room above, a sisal rug would create a nice balance by adding a very textured and earthy element to the many smooth textures in the room.
This room would be balanced nicely with a charcoal flat woven rug by Capel.  The charcoal would blend with the black, but soften the very intense green and black color scheme.  The style of this rug is every bit as hip as the rest of this room. The flat woven nature of the rug goes well with the bit of a beach theme that is shown in the room by way of the art and the mirror.  By the way, I love the mixed and matched bedside tables.  They add the perfect lived in and believable touch.

This adorable room has color, texture, warmth...it just needs Zebra!  You can't see it here, but this is a muted zebra in more of a espresso brown and white. This rug would ground the white chairs and add a finishing touch.( And by the way, we sold this very pattern for a hall runner today, to the client of our star client designer Mimi Hackleman.  The client's  walls are Chartreuse.)

Things That Go Together

We have some new rugs in, and the first thing I do when I love a rug is try to imagine what kind of room it goes into.  This rug would look beautiful in this French Country room, or as the kitchen rug in the room below.  I love the depth of color they used in this rug, which would work well in either of these rooms. The pattern is just delightful and it would really add a special element to either of these spaces.

This rug below is really pretty with a sofened look to the pattern.  I found the perfect accessories for this "imagined" room.  Wouldn't they look great together?

Just Add Some Animal Print

I was picking up at home the other day, and I tossed a zebra print pillow into an off white chair.  It didn't go there, I just threw it there while I was picking up.  I looked at it, and realized that is what the room really needed.  "A little animal print to tie it all together. "  It really did work to tie together a kind of mixed eclectic room.   Here are a few rooms where the surprise of that animal print pattern brings them to life.
I can't forget to show you the animal print in the form of an area rug!
In addition to throw rugs, Cartozian has added just that touch of whimsey to a stair case or closet with a leopard or zebra print carpet.  Animal print never goes out of style.  Happy Decorating, Atharva

A Passion For Design

I was looking for inspiration for this week's blog, and ran across this picture.  I loved the RUG of course.  The article was a designer interview.  The first question was "Where do you start with your design projects?"  I was surprised that the answer that the designer gave.  She often starts with the biggest piece in the room such as the sofa.

In my imagination, the RUG was what inspired the design.  Something that ignites your passion for beautiful things should be the starting point.  Find that special piece of art,  or beautiful textile, or rug, and build your design around it.  In this photo the rug clearly takes center stage.  The design is filled in with the shells, which bring out the coral and tangerine (Pantone's color of the year for 2012 is Tangerine) colors of the rug, the bottle and throw pillows bring out the shades of turquoise and blue in the rug, and the neutral sofa anchors it while providing flexibility for future decorating schemes.  The end result is the same with one important difference, the inspiration of the room would be built around something you love.  That is what makes you feel at home when you come into the room, and creates a room you won't tire of for a long time.
